breakwater vineyardMaine’s newest vineyard and winery located in scenic Owls head! http://www.breakwatervineyards.com/ Owls Head is a short drive from beautiful Camden Maine. This is just one of the many wineries you can try while on the mid coast of Maine. Since it is new, I have not tried it yet myself, so if you have, please let me know. If I ever get a day off from Innkeeping, I am headed to Owls Head to try the wine and enjoy the coastal views!
Breakwater Vinyards in Owls Head (just south of Rockland along the coast) is operated by Bill and Jeanne Johnson. They opened their vinyard and tasting room in July 2010. The Breakwater Vinyards grows more than 3000 vines on a thirty two acre farm. They grow three varieties of vinifera grapes.
The owners say they are committed to being environmentally conscious in how they grow grapes and produce wine.
The 2012 season promises eight different wines including oaked and unoaked Chardonnay, a Maine Blueberry Wine, a dry Riesling, and an estate-grown red.
In addition to a visit to their vinyard you can purchase their wine at shops throughout midcoast Maine. Some local attractions near the vinyard are the Owl’s Head General Store named Sauveur Magazine’s best cheeseburger, the Owls Head Light park, Birch Point State Park, and the Knox County Regional Airport and the Owls Head Transportation Museum.
These attractions are all minutes from Camden Maine and the Camden Maine Windward House a Maine Bed and Breakfast and Camden Maine Lodging.

The Breakwater farm and vinyard has a nice view of Rockland Harbor and the Breakwater Lighthouse, although the distant Camden Hills hints at the truly spectacular and far more interesting harbor of Camden Maine. Breakwater offers tastings on their capacious front porch with a distant view of the harbor and boats. The inside tasting room in their home also contains a gift shop that features Maine made products in addition to their wine. They donate all proceeds from a section of the gift shop to the Friends of the Breakwater Lighthouse a non profit group that maintains and repairs the lighthouse on the jetty.

They have a nice black lab on the property – what kind of farm on the Maine coast would be complete without one, and also some livestock, including chickens and goats!
