The Coast of Maine is all about blueberries and lobster. The interior and northern Maine is a lot different. The interior and northern Maine is about potatoes and lumbering. Maine is almost 2 different states when you drive around and see the plethora of different landscapes. I was asked by a Scottish guest at breakfast recently where should he go to get the true essence of Maine. I hesitated because I know about this parallel dynamic of landscapes in Maine. I knew the guest only had 2 days to be in town and did not think it was wise to send him North West to see potato fields and lumberman. I think if you have a month of wondering in Maine, you could make such a trip if not, a wise time to come to see that side of Maine is during the MOFGA (Maine Organic Farm Growers Association) Common Grounds festival September 25, 26, 27 2015.
I wanted to write this post because I am starting to really appreciate Maine potatoes. We have added homefries to our breakfast menu and I am not sure why it took us 10 years to make this addition. When in Maine, eat the potatoes, it is a local staple, like grits in the south. Here at Windward House, I am the Vegan cook and have veganized this great breakfast side dish. Here is a link to the Vegan Homefries.
